Policy about Food Brought in to Share

As a district, we are continuing to try to model and promote making healthy choices when it comes to students' eating habits. Efforts have been made to create balanced school lunches with appropriate serving sizes. We also try to help students understand the impact junk food makes on their physical health and energy levels. While treats are a fun part of our children's lives, we also believe these should be given in moderation and balanced with physical activities.

Beginning this year, snacks and treats served in classrooms for any occasion must be arranged in advance and will not be distributed in class unless they are approved by the school staff. A Request for Food Served in the Classroom is available upon request from your child's teacher, from the office, or is available on our website by clicking on the link: Important School forms.

Due to the individual health needs of our students, there are some guidelines to observe when choosing a treat for the class:

· Items should be 200 calories or less per serving.

· Treats and snacks must be store-bought and sealed in their containers when brought to school.

· Snacks/treats that provide a clearly printed listing of ingredients on the packaging are preferred.

· No homemade treats will be distributed to students at school.

· Please be aware of allergy considerations. It is a good idea to call your child's teacher prior to filling out this request form.

· Written requests (this form) must be turned in at least three (3) days in advance of food being served

· Food will not be given to students unless this form is signed by school staff.
